Walk for Literacy in Boston Barakat Inc.’s headquarters is located in Cambridge.  As part of the greater Boston area, it is an international environment, and the perfect place for Barakat to raise awareness about education in South and Central Asia, bringing a global connection to our local community through a collaboration with schools, businesses and other nonprofits.

Barakat Cambridge operates with one full-time and one part-time staff, keeping our overhead low. We have an active and strong internship program that attracts many talented university students from all over Massachusetts, who are passionate about our work. In addition, we have dedicated volunteers, friends and donors who provide in-kind hours, advice, and funds to help further our mission. One of our annual events is Walk for Literacy. Barakat has been hosting this fun event since 2008. The event raises funds for, and awareness about, our mission and programs. Each year, the Walk takes place on the last Saturday of September, at 10 AM, starting from Cambridge Common. The walkers are a diverse group–elementary school students, young professionals, donors, Barakat’s board of directors and friends. The 2.5 and 5 mile walks meander along the scenic Charles River in Cambridge, then introduce walkers to diverse areas of Cambridge before concluding with lunch and beverages at the Cambridge Common.
