New efforts to bridge the gender gap in rural India

India’s new Department of Education kicked off its work with an initiative to improve equal opportunity for rural students, starting with the female literacy rate and career gender gap.

In this Feb. 23 article, the Times of India reports that the Rural Education Cell hosted a seminar to address the state of rural education in the country. They will soon begin streamlining and enhancing programs that bring opportunity to rural students. For girls, whose literacy levels still lag well behind boys’, the department will promote skill development in fields like plumbing and repairs that “break gender stereotypes and empower girls.”
